Confined Space

LIST OF IDENTIFIED CONFINED SPACES AT SDSU
Note: Any additional confined spaces identified during the course of work that are not currently listed on this form will be evaluated and listed as applicable.
Confined Space Classification: Permit Required Confined Space or Non-permit Required Confined Space Comments
Boiler Permit Required Thermal hazards
Lockout/Tagout is required
Extremely limited access
Crawl spaces with pressurized steam lines Permit Required These areas include:
Communication
Little Theatre
Hepner Hall
Hardy Tower
Art North
Life Sciences South West side
Physical Sciences
Physics Astronomy
Chill Plant
Crawl spaces with asbestos contamination Permit Required Entrant is required to use specific PPE when accessing areas with asbestos contamination. This does not include crawl spaces with labeled intact asbestos containing material.
Crawl space with no air vents Permit Required Scripps Cottage
Sewer sump pit, ejector pit Permit Required Under normal conditions all potential hazards can be eliminated except a potentially hazardous atmosphere. Alternate Entry Procedures can be implemented. Lockout/tagout and securing sewer systems is required prior to entry.
Electrical manholes Permit Required Electrical hazards
Steam manhole Permit Required Pressurized steam lines
Thermal hazards, hot surfaces and high ambient air temperatures
Sewer manholes Permit Required Potentially hazardous atmosphere
Biological hazards
Overhead crawl spaces with pressurized steam lines Permit Required These areas include:
NH 100
Life Sciences North basement
Industrial Technology
Speech Language Hearing first floor
Theatre Arts Back Drop Access Room 8B Non-permit Required This room contains a sump that is serviced occasionally. There is the potential for debris to fall into the area so before accessing the sump notification of the Theatre Arts department technicians is required to ensure items are not dropped into area.
Crawl spaces Non-permit Required These spaces can potentially contain closed sewer lines and electrical lines which are encased in conduit.
Communication manholes Non-permit Required An atmospheric check is required and is documented on the pre-entry checklist.
Storm Drains Non-permit Required Potential but unlikely hazards during entry include flooding, CO, low oxygen, and H2S.
Overhead crawl spaces Non-permit Required These spaces can potentially contain closed sewer lines and electrical lines which are encased in conduit.
Cistern No Entry Permitted This is restricted.

Please Note:

  • If additional confined spaces are identified, please inform EH&S so the spaces can be evaluated and added to this main list.

  • Spaces classified as permit required confined spaces are classified as such due to the inherent hazards that exist inside the space. Permit-required confined spaces may be declassified to non-permit required confined spaces if hazards are corrected or eliminated in the space.

  • Spaces classified as non-permit required may need to be reclassified to permit required based on work practices to be performed inside the space.

  • A Confined Space Pre-Entry Checklist must be completed prior to entering non-permit required confined spaces.

  • Communication is required during work in all confined spaces on campus.

  • At least two employees are required at the site during work in manholes and crawl spaces.

  • When working in crawl spaces employees will wear a gas detector as a precautionary measure to facilitate self rescue if needed.

  • The surrounding area must be secured during all confined space work.
