Telecommunications Infrastructure Project (TIP)

TIP Overview

Telecommunications and Network Services (TNS) and Facilities Planning has been upgrading the campus telecommunications (voice, data) infrastructure. The project, known as Telecommunications Infrastructure Project, or TIP, went out to bid in July 2004 and is now nearly complete.

Introduction

The California State University, through the Technology Infrastructure Initiative (TII) component of its Integrated Technology Strategy (ITS), is pursuing the build-out of the intra-campus telecommunications infrastructures at each of the 23 CSU campuses. This system-wide project is the culmination of years of intensive effort by CSU, which include the creation of a Telecommunications Infrastructure Master Plan (TIMP) for each campus and the development of the system's comprehensive technology standards, such as the Telecommunications Infrastructure Planning (TIP) Guidelines and the Minimum Baseline service provisioning standards.

Project Goals

The purpose of the TIP is to "ensure all CSU students, faculty and staff have access to the broadest possible range of information resources and related technology" in order to advance excellence in teaching and learning, quality of student experience, administrative productivity, and personal productivity.

Minimum Baseline Standard

After a building is complete, all active data connections will be 10/100 MB/sec switched Ethernet. TIP upgrades the campus cabling to Category 6 (Cat 6) for all buildings within the project. All offices 100 sq feet and larger will have a minimum of two communications outlets per room. A communications outlet will consist of three Cat 6 cables. One designated for voice services (phone, fax, modem) and two for data services (Ethernet). Instructional and academic spaces in common use (e.g. classroom, laboratory, or preparation environment) will have a voice, data and video assignment.

Status

The project is scheduled to complete in late 2007.
