Department Overview

The Telecommunications and Network Services (TNS) Department, a unit of Communications and Computing Services, provides telephone and data network services for San Diego State University, residence halls, auxiliary organizations, the National City, Sky Park, Calexico and Brawley Campuses and other related off-site locations. The Ericsson MD110 PBX Switch has over 12,000 installed lines, and the Octel XC1000 Voice Information Processing System has over 12,000 voice mail boxes. TNS is also responsible for a centralized DNA Database and Directory listings, approximately 8,000 data nodes on campus, and 1,500 Cable TV drops at campus residence halls. The department installs and maintains all emergency telephones, elevator telephones, special circuits required for use with the Card Access and Energy Management systems, and other alarm systems. TNS works with Facilities Planning and Physical Plant on remodeling and new building projects, as well as with Public Safety, Instructional Technology Services, KPBS and other areas in support of their unique communications needs.
